Yara recently published what is effectively new season A.N prices in France. This market is always earlier than in the UK and is useful as a reference point for our own new season which tends to come later. Prices for Granular A.N 33.5N are around €27/t lower than the starting point of 2019. It is too early yet to gauge the response of the French market to this. A €27/t reduction would equate to around £23.50/t on todays’ exchange rate. That would put UK Prilled A.N at around £ 230/t based on last years’ UK starting price of around £ 255. This is not far off the current spot price on farm, which may struggle to get much enthusiasm. The usual reference points for the launch of the 2020/21 A.N market such as the Cereals Event will not be present this year, how CF and Yara respond to the new normal will be interesting to see.

Ammonium Sulphate 21N 60SO3 (AS) supply could become affected as a result of the Covid-19 crisis. A significant amount of AS is produced as a co-product of Caprolactam production. Caprolactam is used to manufacture fibres and plastics, especially in the car industry, which has seen much production halted due to the Coronavirus. This is a subject to keep a close eye on as the 2020/21 season develops.
